To Two-Piece or Not To Two-Piece

OK I am struggling with something (actually kinda shallow) but struggling all the same. I would love your opinion on the matter and please be honest; am I over thinking this?

We have a strict NO TWO PIECE bathing suit rule for our girls. We decided this when they were very young and the thought of our sweet toddlers walking around in a triangle bathing suit top made us cringe. Then as they got older the thought of my kiddo walking around in a two piece with all the sick people out there made me physically ill. I am sure everyone is thinking I am crazy but seriously they are little girls, they are supposed to be running, jumping and playing in the sand and water and NOT worrying about anything showing or being modest with a "to short top." So that's not changing. Case closed.

My dilemma is this; I have ALWAYS worn a two piece. Dan and were talking about our up coming trip to Hawaii & the suits I was looking at on line. Dan said,"honey, do you think its OK for you to enforce the "modesty" one piece rule on the girls and you continue to wear a two piece?" hhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm...............................so ever since then I have been struggling with the thought that maybe I should not be wearing one either. I mean obviously I am not flipping down the beach exposing my "stuff." So I ask you, whats your opinion on this topic?

Tankini?? Is that still considered a two piece? I think you can find pretty modest two pieces these days, and you are a married adult, so I personally don't think it's a big deal. You do have a pretty cute figure, but I know you're modest :) I think buns and boobs hanging out of a bathing suit is worse than a little bit of tummy showing. So that's my opinion :)

Remember when I was a teenager and HATED that rule :) Ahhh, now that I have my own daughter I'm sure I'll want here wearing a one piece as well.

yes I remember that rule your parents set Jess and I also remember you sneaking them out of the house to change into at the beach. he,heeee.......bad girl!

hmmmm.. did ya say you are not showing your stuff... are ya sure...hehe ;-)

You probably already know how I feel about it but I do think tankinis are ok for the girls... I just remember pulling up those wet one pieces after a bathroom break when I was little and hating it so I always feel bad for B when she has to.. although she doesn't complain... yet.

I think you have to go on a suit-by-suit basis. Some bathing suits which are technically two pieces are way more modest than others which are just one piece. Also, as Stacy pointed out, using the restroom is so much easier with a two piece. What about a modest top and some board shorts? A couple years ago, Delaney told me she felt weird wearing two pieces and I did absolutely nothing to try to convince her otherwise. :)

Well Dan does have a valid point about double standards and being the example. I think tankinis are a great 2-piece option, because they are still modest, which is really the issue at hand - modesty.
And if you feel that you just need to stick to the one-piece only rule for the girls, then Dan needs to buy you a darn cute one-piece ;)
Not that you would look bad in anything anyways.

I agree with Rhonda...you don't want to be a do as I say not as I do parent.

What if you give the kids Tankini's like Jessica recommended. My Gracie got one this year and it is super cute. I always ask her what she thinks and if it is respectable and modest (yes even though she is 4) I truly try to respect her selection...of course I draw the line a lot. Wish I could do the 2 piece thing there are not many of us any more that can! Luck you 'hot' mama. :)

Ouch, your hubby does have a point. Maybe he brought this up because he doesn't want you wearing one? I would stick with whatever he wants. I guess besides finding out what he would prefer, your question would be is it OK with you if they are grown married women and wear a 2 piece? Because sometimes adults do have different rules, but you need to make sure you're OK with that. Which means you really have to think about what you believe is Ok or not.

My husband is the opposite, always trying to get me to show more skin. But I am more on the modest side, too.

It never bothered me for my girls to wear 2 pieces, but the more I learn about modesty and especially how it affects men the stricter my rules get. I wish I had never read "Every Man's Battle!"

I agree Angela and I too have read ALL the Every Mans Battle books. Nope my husband likes me in a 2 piece but he is concerned about raising our girls up in this crazy world. Would I ca re if they grew up and wore two pieces? No not really. My hearts desire is that they think of the people around them they are affecting with their actions. Good points thanks everyone. :)

Wow! What a great topic Christy!

I don't see it really as any different than other girlie things like make up, heels, ear piercing and the like. I think there is an age where each parent has to decide on those things and when they are apporpriate. I don't think it would be a do as I say not as I do with any of those things. After all I don't know of any moms that give up make up because they don't want their daughter to wear it until they are older. Does that make sense? I know you don't wear make up but it is just an example...

Good luck with your decision and thanks for giving us all something to think about it:)

I like the tankini idea for reasons already given. I think that one pieces can be even sexier and more revealing than two pieces. The decision should be a case by case one. Take into consideration what the girls (and you) are doing on the beach - laying out or playing in the undercurrent. Then go with your gut...you have a great head on your shoulders. Let us know what you decide!

Hi Christy. Needless to say, I find this an interesting topic. I know you will make the right decision. I pray that whatever you decide, your Christin friends will support you and your girls. Debbie Walters
